This intensive, two-day, pre-ACR Convergence conference is designed to meet the specific educational needs of rheumatology professionals who want to learn ultrasound technology. Under the guidance of experts from around the world, attendees will perform hands-on scanning of live models to enhance technical proficiency for the diagnosis of normal and abnormal clinical conditions. At the completion of this course, attendees should be able to demonstrate familiarity with the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, hip, knee, foot, and ankle, and ultrasound guidance of aspirations, injections, and biopsies.
Two courses were offered in 2024. Each course took place over two days. Participants selected either:
- Basic-Intermediate Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Course or
- Advanced Ultrasound: Inflammatory Arthropathies, Lupus, Sjögren's Disease, Interstitial Lung Disease, and Vasculitis
Both novice and advanced learners are encouraged to join one of the courses. Although documentation is not required, some basic experience in rheumatologic joint sonography is recommended as a prerequisite for the Advanced Ultrasound course.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for rheumatology professionals with a beginner to low intermediate level of ultrasound experience, or rheumatology professionals with ultrasound experience interested in advanced learning opportunities. To provide an optimal learning environment, attendance is limited.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the Basic-Intermediate Course, participants should be able to:
- Recognize indications for the use of ultrasound in rheumatology practice
- Incorporate the use of ultrasound in their practice
- Acquire reliable and consistent ultrasound images of basic-intermediate level elementary lesions
- Interpret ultrasound images adequately in a manner that informs clinical decision making and patient education
- Incorporate ultrasound guidance into joint and tendon injection procedure
Upon completion of the Advanced Course, participants should be able to:
- Recognize ultrasound pathology related to various types of rheumatic conditions
- Acquire and interpret ultrasound images of various rheumatic conditions using validated scoring systems
- Engage in more effective shared decision-making processes with patients with the information provided by ultrasound images acquired at the point of care
- Recognize more advanced ultrasound guided procedural techniques
- Incorporate effective dynamic maneuvers to improve image acquisition
