RhMSUS Certification

The American College of Rheumatology offers certification to individual physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who perform musculoskeletal ultrasound as part of their practice of rheumatology. The Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Certification in Rheumatology™ – RhMSUS™ certification demonstrates competency in musculoskeletal ultrasound and promotes quality of care.

Important RhMSUS™ Certification Update
The RhMSUS certification program is currently paused while the ACR evaluates the program’s future and potential transition options. The ACR will not certify new RhMSUS candidates or recertify candidates after June 30, 2026.
Registration for the spring exam is closed. The May 15–June 15 spring exam window will proceed as planned. Anyone who currently holds RhMSUS certification will retain the certification for its full 10-year term.
Recertification Program Update: All RhMSUS designees may now recertify, even if your certification does not expire in the next year. The deadline to recertify is June 15, 2026. See more details below about recertification.
The ACR will share more as decisions about the program’s future are finalized.
RhMSUS™ Process
Participation in the Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Certification in Rheumatology™ - RhMSUS™ program is voluntary and open to anyone who meets the eligibility requirements.
RhMSUS Recertification
RhMSUS™ certification is valid for 10 years. At this time, all current RhMSUS designees may recertify. The deadline to apply for recertification is June 15, 2026.
There is no ACR recertification exam.
Requirements will be attested by each candidate and include the following:
- 24 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ specifically related to musculoskeletal ultrasound within 36 months prior to recertifying
OR
- 36 scans within 12 months prior to recertifying
PLUS
- $1,000 fee
Once approved the RhMSUS™ Certified Member will be given a new 10-year certification period.
They will also receive a recertification certificate with that new certification date.
